VE Day

art history

Friday 8th May 2020 marked 75 years since Britain declared victory over its enemies in World War 2. We believed this to be an excellent teaching opportunity not to be missed. Levi and Laila-Mai were engrossed in the World War 2 videos they were shown to introduce the project. There were lots of questions and conversations about what it was like for people during the war and what lessons we can learn during this uncertain time.

Our neighbourhood planned a number of lockdown garden parties. Each family planned to have a picnic in their own garden, which meant we were still all able to come together but at a distance.

Levi and Laila-Mai helped make preparations for the day including baking buns and making bunting. We also talked about our ancestors and created a family tree dating back to the time of the war, to show them how it relates to us today. They also spent time using morse code to decipher a secret message, using their maths skills to crack number codes, and converting numbers into words.

Levi and Laila-Mai made their own Spitfire models after watching a documentary about the iconic aircraft. These were put together and painted to display on the day. The week ended in a very special VE Day celebration with everyone out in their gardens and people passing by, we all had a wonderful day in the sun, playing games and listening to some war time classics.
